Hate the gym? Feel inadequate next to sweaty Muscle Marys grunting and slamming weights around? You're not alone by far. Ben Carpenter, a well known trainer and author, cited an example of clients refusing to train in the gym they were paid up members of, preferring to train in the cold just outside because they couldn't face going in. The truth is, if you're not in shape, it's easy to feel judged and sneered at in a gym environment.
We believe in movement for joy. We believe that all movement is good movement. If you like the gym and want a program that will develop hypertrophy and low body fat percentage, we can deliver that, we have the technical skills and knowledge. But if you're that way inclined, you're probably not the ones reading this. This page is for people who feel excluded from mainstream fitness, for whatever reason that may be. Our service works with YOU, with your body's capability, and progresses you at the rate suitable for you. The exercise prescription is completely unique to you, and is holistic, taking everything that makes you, you, into account. We want you to love movement!
We have an in depth consultation about you, your lifestyle, your likes and dislikes, your body image, your goals and why they matter to you. We really get to know you, and get to know what makes you tick. The only items of equipment we would suggest is that you invest in a smart watch that can tell you your heart rate - leave the rest to us to design you a movement plan that you will love and that will work. If you hate running, don't run. If you live near a beach, walk your dog on the sand. If you can't get to classes but fancy a good workout, we will film some workouts for you to do and email them to you. The point is that you move in a way you love, and our expertise will ensure that the movement is progressed to respond to your increasing ability.
Kate is qualified to Level 3 in Personal Training and is registered with CIMSPA. She is currently studying Level 3 Exercise Referral to help people with long term medical conditions. She is 45 years old, does not have a six pack and enjoys Domino's pizza. She is fit, healthy and believes that our bodies are wonderful things and that to move in a way you enjoy is an expression of gratitude for the ability to move. She does resistance training, HIIT, yoga, calisthenics and is currently doing CPD in becoming a Pilates instructor, and a course in teaching Hatha Yoga. She is also disabled through Multiple Sclerosis and is blessed to be able to walk her dog on the beach now she is in remission.
Do not define yourself by your waistline. Do not be deceived by fitness influencers who will go to any lengths, including diet pills, fat strippers, starvation - leading to mental health troubles and more - to post a picture of the perfect body. You have the perfect body for you. We believe that health is far more important than aesthetics, and your self worth being defined from within and not by these crazy unrealistic beauty standards is the aim of our programme.
Body positivity is for ALL bodies. We want to normalise disabled people in gyms, with true accessibility for wheelchairs and a body-friendly culture. Kate has a catheter and collection bag strapped to her leg and wants to be able to walk into a gym, in tight top and leggings with the bag on show, and nobody bat an eyelid. We believe movement is for EVERY BODY. Legs don't work? Put on your favourite dance tunes and throw some shapes with your arms - that will get your heart rate up. The mental and physical benefits of movement are so important, and even more so for those whose baseline health is lower than others.
This program is online. We have an hour a week focused on your fitness, whether that is mindset coaching, or you want someone to dance around with and enjoy your favourite tunes on Zoom, we are completely guided by you. We will develop a three month macrocycle, broken down into four week blocks, with training aims and methods of progressing your workouts, whatever they may be, so you know you will be in good hands to help you achieve your goals.
It is so very important to have a good relationship with food. Labelling has become "calorie dense" or "nutrient dense" as there are still the undertones of "good" or "bad" food. So many people still exercise to burn off calories, or beat themselves up for finishing a tub of ice cream and then think to themselves that they have to exercise even harder to cancel out what they have just eaten. Yes, the rules of thermodynamics exist, but we are emotional beings who experience enjoyment, rather than machines who should be ruled by numbers. Remember the aim here is health, physical and mental. Our self worth is not defined by the numbers on the scale (which are distorted by how much carbohydrate you have eaten the day before, how much salt you had, if you are a menstruating person, where in your cycle you are, all sorts), nor are we rabbits, destined for a life of misery just eating lettuce. The key word is BALANCE.
We understand if this resonated with you - get in touch to find out more about how we can help!
We have super-duper software that allows us to analyse meal plans or food diaries to see if the required vitamins and minerals are present to ensure optimum health. We can get to know you, what you love, create healthy alternatives (Kate loves protein pizza) that are delicious and filling, and leave you wanting to nourish your body even more. We can have mindset coaching sessions with you to explore your relationship with food, and help you get to a place where health is priority - reward your body by putting the best food into it, eat mindfully and gratefully, learn to listen to your body's signals, and develop a healthy relationship with good, nutritious food and the occasional luscious, indulgent treat!
Kate holds Level 3 Nutrition and Weight Management, and is currently completing the assessment for Level 4, which holds membership for the Royal Society of Public Health. She is qualified to give nutritional advice to healthy people at present, but any health conditions would require you to speak to a doctor or a dietitian before making changes to your diet.
